
Days after Anna Shcherbakova won the ladies’ event at the first stage of the Cup of Russia, another Sambo-70 star – Sofya Akatyeva – followed suit in the junior ladies’ event.
Already holding a 16.11-point lead after the short program, the 12-year-old figure skater opened up her free skate program with a triple axel and then a quad toe loop on her way to a dominant gold medal in Syzran. Earning 149.69 points in the free skate, her total score of 230.83 points was light years ahead of second place Maria Zakharova who earned a total of 187.20 points. Valeria Ovchinnikova placed third with 186.39 points.
Akatyeva is another one of Eteri Tutberidze’s, Sergei Dudakov’s, and Daniil Gleikhengauz’s students who has a bright future ahead of her. In early 2019, coach Tutberidze posted the young skater – then just 11 years old – performing a quad toe loop in practice becoming a sensation:
