50th anniversary of Sambo-70 in Russia

Two-time World Champion and returning member of Eteri Tutberidze’s Khrustalny team at Sambo-70 – Evgenia Medvedeva received the honor of raising the Russian national flag for the school’s 50th anniversary.

Instagram post by the General Director of Sambo-70, Renat Laishev, and translation to English:

Today “Sambo-70” has a big anniversary! Hooray!!! Our beloved school celebrates its 50th anniversary! Happy Holidays to everyone!
Despite all the restrictions associated with the pandemic, we were able to create a festive mood so that everyone felt the festive moment. Thanks to our pupil, two-time silver medal winner of the Olympic Games, two-time World and European champion Zhenya Medvedeva, who on behalf of all our pupils, took part in the ceremony of raising the Russian flag!
I want to sincerely thank everyone who loves our school, who helped it, who put their soul, knowledge and talents into our common cause! “Sambo-70” – half a century, and we are very young, we have everything ahead!

The event was not marked without controversy, as fans quickly noticed that Olympic gold medalist Alina Zagitova was not present at the festivities. General Director of the Sports and Education Center “Sambo-70”, Renat Laishev, told reporters that the plan was to have both Medvedeva and Zagitova participate in the flag raising ceremony; however, according to Laishev, Zagitova was busy filming the ice skating show Ice Age for Channel One.

After Zagitova made a post on Instagram, a fan asked the 18-year-old why she was not present at the anniversary festivities. Zagitova’s response was: “they didn’t call me.”
