Matteo Rizzo announces new coach

Earlier this month, Italian figure skater Matteo Rizzo announced that he would no longer be working with his longtime coach Franca Bianconi. Today, the 22-year-old revealed that he has joined Lorenzo Magri’s team in Egna.

Instagram post by Matteo Rizzo:

My new home. Thank you for welcoming me in this splendid way, coach Lorenzo Magri and all the Young Goose Academy and Fiamme Azzurre team.

Magri is a coach and choreographer who also works with one of Rizzo’s main rivals in Italy – 18-year-old Daniel Grassl. The Italian Ice Sports Federation recently announced that they will host their own national Grand Prix series, which is scheduled to begin this upcoming weekend in Bergamo. Both Rizzo and Grassl are listed as participants.

Rizzo won a gold medal at the 2019 Winter Universiade, a bronze medal at the 2019 European Championship, and was the bronze medalist at the 2018 World Junior Championship. Last season, he was fifth at the European Championship – right behind his new teammate Grassl.
