Huge favorite at the all-Chinese stage of the ISU Grand Prix series in Chongqing, two-time World Championship bronze medalist Boyang Jin landed two quads in the short program and currently holds the top score at the Cup of China.
Jin opened his short program performance with a quad Lutz and then added a quad toe loop-double toe loop combination, as well as a triple axel. Fourth at the 2018 Winter Olympics and last season’s winner of this competition, the 23-year-old figure skater received a total program component score of 44.91 points and earned a total segment score of 103.94 points. He holds first place by over eleven points after the first performance.
Two-time Olympian and three-time bronze medalist at the Four Continents Championship, Han Yan did not attempt any quad jumps but avoided mistakes. He opened his short program routine with a triple axel and then added a triple flip-triple toe loop combination and a triple Lutz. He earned a component score of 44.33 points and a total program score of 92.56 points.
16-year-old Chinese Junior National champion Yudong Chen is third after the short program. He held on to a shaky opening triple axel attempt and then successfully completed a triple flip-triple toe loop combination and a triple Lutz. He received a total segment score of 75.74 points and trails the silver medal position by over sixteen points but is ahead of fourth place by over six points.

18-year-old Hongyi Chen outscored her closest opponent by nearly fifteen points in the short program of the ladies’ event. Three-time medalist at the Chinese National Championship, Chen began her performance with a slight quarter under-rotation on the opening triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination and then successfully landed a triple flip and a double axel. With a total program component score of 29.62 points, she earned a total segment score of 64.63 points for a commanding lead going into the free skate.
Former U.S. representative Angel Li opened her short program routine with a triple Lutz-double toe loop combination but then fell on a triple flip attempt. She is currently second with a score of 49.94 points. Minzhi Jin landed a triple Salchow-double toe loop combination and a double axel but fell on a triple toe loop attempt. She received a short program score of 47.75 points and is currently in third position.

Last season’s silver medalists at the ISU Grand Prix Final, the pair of Cheng Peng and Yang Jin are in first place after the short program with a total score of 75.62 points. With just three couples in the event, Yuchen Wang and Yihang Huang hold the silver medal position with a score of 63.56 points, and Daizifei Zhu and Yuhang Liu are in the bronze medal place with 54.37 points.

2018 Olympians and four-time Chinese National champions Shiyue Wang and Xinyu Liu took the lead of the ice dance event after the rhythm dance. The 26-year-olds earned a score of 84.23 points and stand almost eight points ahead of two-time Chinese National silver medalists Hong Chen and Zhuoming Sun, who received a score of 76.57 points for their performance. Wanqi Ning and Chao Wang currently occupy the last podium position with a score of 69.07 points.
