Kostornaia leads in Kazan after short program

2020 European champion Alena Kostornaia finally made her highly anticipated season’s debut at the fourth stage of the Cup of Russia series in Kazan.

Skating her short program to music from Billie Eilish, the 17-year-old figure skater did not attempt a triple axel but rather landed a clean opening double axel. She then landed a good triple Lutz and held on to a triple flip-triple toe loop combination. She received a total performance score of 78.15 points to take the lead.

Two-time World Junior champion and winner of the second stage of the Cup of Russia series in Moscow, Alexandra Trusova attempted a triple axel at the start of her performance and landed it but had a tight landing just as she had in her previous competition. The 16-year-old then landed a solid triple flip and a great triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination. Trusova received a program component score of 34.32 points and a total segment score of 77.42 points. She is currently in second position.

Bronze medalist at the first stage of the Cup of Russia series, Khrustalny’s Maya Khromykh began her short program with a double axel. The 14-year-old also landed a triple Lutz and a triple flip-triple toe loop combination. She received a total performance score of 76.89 points and holds third place.

2019 European champion Sofia Samodurova delivered a great short program. She began her performance with a triple flip-triple toe loop combination and then landed a clean double axel and a triple Lutz. Fourth overall at the third stage of the Cup of Russia series in Sochi, Samodurova received a total short program score of 67.16 points and is currently in fourth place.

Sixth overall at the third stage of the Cup of Russia series, Elizaveta Nugumanova held on to her opening triple Lutz. She had a tight landing on her signature triple loop-triple loop combination, and added a good double axel. The popular 18-year-old from St. Petersburg earned a short program score of 64.39 points and holds fifth position.

Fifth at the Moscow stage of the Cup of Russia series, 20-year-old Stanislava Konstantinova made a mistake on her opening jump – a triple Lutz – which should have been in a combination, and was successfully completed multiple times in the six-minute warm-up. Skating to Seven Nation Army, she landed a good double axel but then doubled the second jump in the necessary combination – triple flip-double toe loop. The Angels of Plushenko representative received a short program score of 62.60 points and is in sixth place.

Ksenia Tsibinova, representing Sergei Davydov’s group at CSKA, landed her opening triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination and then a double axel. The young skater made a mistake on her triple loop attempt, but luckily did not fall. She received a short program score of 62.33 points.

16-year-old Anastasia Tarakanova made her season’s debut in Kazan. Skating to the Russian song Devochka i More (Girl and The Sea), the former student of both Eteri Tutberidze and Evgeny Plushenko opened her short program with a triple Lutz-double toe loop combination and then a good double axel. She also completed a triple flip. Tarakanova earned a score of 58.44 points and made it into the top ten.

Valeria Shulskaya, from Evgeny Plushenko’s figure skating academy, was sixth overall at the second stage of the Cup of Russia series in Moscow. She began her short program with a good triple flip and a double axel, but had a tight landing on a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination. Shulskaya earned a total score of 57.98 points.

15-year-old Valeria Kostina began her performance with a double axel, and later successfully completed a triple flip and a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination. The young competitor from Tula Oblast, skating to You Raise Me Up, delivered a strong program and received a total score of 54.97 points. She is currently tenth.

Valeria Larionova started her short program with a strong triple flip-triple toe loop combination and then a double axel. An error on her first spin cost a few points on the grade of execution but she recovered with a good triple loop. Larionova received a score of 53.75 points.

Alexandra Malakhova was the first to skate. The figure skater from the Republic of Crimea, she began her short program with a shaky triple Salchow-double toe loop combination and fell on her triple flip and double axel attempts. She received a score of 35.35 points and is twelfth.
