13-year-old Sofya Akatyeva performed a triple axel-triple toe loop combination in the short program and two quadruple toe loops in the free skate on her way to win the junior ladies’ event at the fourth stage of the Cup of Russia series in Kazan.
Akatyeva was first after the short program by nine points – she had earned 80.12 points. She received three bonus points: for the opening triple axel-triple toe loop combination and for two level-four spins.
Eteri Tutberidze’s skater opened her free skate program with a quad toe loop-double toe loop combination and followed that up with a good quad toe loop attempt on the next jumping sequence. She also landed a triple axel and then a triple loop in the first part of the performance. A fall on a triple Lutz in the second part of the routine must have given her opponents hope but Akatyeva landed a triple flip-Euler-triple Salchow combination and somehow hung on to a triple Lutz-double toe loop combination. She received a total competition score of 231.44 points.
This season, Akatyeva has already competed in two junior-level events in Russia, even though she is not even old enough to do so at international events, and won two gold medals. At the first stage of the Cup of Russia series in Syzran this past September, Akatyeva celebrated a dominant forty-point victory, earning a total competition score of 230.83 points.
12-year-old sensation Veronika Zhilina is known for her triple axel and quad jump attempts in training, and is another very promising Russian figure skater. Formerly a student of Tutberidze, Zhilina now trains at Angels of Plushenko and is coached by Evgeny Plushenko and Sergei Rozanov. She opened her free skate performance with a double axel. Second after the short program, Zhilina landed a quad toe loop-double toe loop combination but then fell on a following quad toe loop attempt. A further triple loop and a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination were successful. She made a mistake on a triple Lutz-Euler-triple Salchow combination but finished the performance with a good triple flip attempt. Zhilina received a total competition score of 197.45 points and won the silver medal.
Fourth after her short program performance, Arina Gorbacheva, from Tver Oblast, opened her free skate routine with a triple flip and then a triple Lutz-double toe loop combination. Skating to similar music that Anna Shcherbakova skated to last season, Gorbacheva landed a double axel-triple toe loop combination to finish the first half of the outing. She earned a total competition score of 193.68 points and placed third overall.
Elizaveta Osokina began her free skate with a triple Salchow and then a triple flip. After a triple loop, she landed a double axel to complete a good first half of the performance. In the second part of the routine, she made a slight error on a triple Lutz and a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination before landing a double axel-triple toe loop-double toe loop combination. The skater from the Republic of Tatarstan received a total score of 182.28 points and finished fourth in the competition.
Sixth after the short program, Daria Sadkova – a very young new member of Tutberidze’s Khrustalny, opened her free skate performance with a triple axel and then landed a triple flip-double toe loop combination. After a successful triple loop, a double axel, and a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, Sadkova fell on her final two jumps – a triple Lutz and a triple flip. The skater earned a total competition score of 173.88 points and placed sixth overall.
Third after the short program with a score of 67.71 points, Sofia Muravyeva withdrew from the competition and did not take part in the free skate. “Not feeling well” was cited as the reason.
