Reigning two-time Russian National champions and winners of the 2020 Rostelecom Cup, ice dancers Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov will not take part in the final stage of the Cup of Russia series.
TASS reports that the couple made this decision after learning that they will be admitted into the Russian National Championship regardless of their participation in the fifth stage of the Cup series. Earlier, there was a requirement that skaters must participate in at least two stages of the series to qualify for the National Championship.
Sinitsina and Katsalapov withdrew from the test skates in September due to a Katsalapov’s back injury. Later, the skaters performed at the second stage of the Cup of Russia series in Moscow but could not complete the free dance program due to Sinitsina’s knee pain. As a result, the skaters withdrew from the third stage of the series in Sochi; Sinitsina was diagnosed with inflammation of the knee tendon. At the Russian stage of the ISU Grand Prix series, Sinitsina and Katsalapov won with a total competition score of 217.51 points.
The duo’s coach Alexander Zhulin said, “Yes, the guys will miss the fifth stage of the Cup of Russia series but we didn’t really plan to participate there anyway. We thought that we would have to compete there but then we learned that we would still be admitted to the Russian National Championship. And then we made the decision not to skate at the Cup.”
The final stage of the Cup series will take place at the Megasport Sports Palace in Moscow from December 5 to 8. The Russian National Figure Skating Championship will take place at the end of December in Chelyabinsk.
