In early December, Alena Kostornaia tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to miss the fifth stage of the Cup of Russia series and later the Russian National Championships.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist and one of Kostornaia’s coaches Evgeni Plushenko told Russian sports news outlet Sport24 that “Sasha Trusova and Alena Kostornaia are doing well. Both train, work. Kostornaia fully recovered from her illness.”
This season, the 17-year-old figure skater won silver medals at both the fourth stage of the Cup of Russia series and the Rostelecom Cup before contracting the coronavirus.
The World Figure Skating Championships, scheduled to be held in Stockholm at the end of March, are still expected to take place. Having won the Russian Championships, Anna Shcherbakova has outright qualified for the competition; two remaining spots for Russian ladies are still available. The Figure Skating Federation of Russia have said that they will hold more domestic competitions until the event.
On January 28, the International Skating Union (ISU) will hold a board meeting to determine whether the World Championships will take place in the midst of the ongoing worldwide pandemic.
