By winning a gold medal at the third consecutive World Figure Skating Championships, five-time U.S. national champion Nathan Chen – who has been undefeated in all singles competitions since the 2018 Worlds – received praise from America’s largest sports channel, ESPN.
Chen was included in the SportsCenter Top 10, which highlights the best moments in any sports competitions from around the world. Usually, the list consists of the top basketball, football, hockey plays, or any one of the more mainstream sports.
The 21-year-old is the first U.S. figure skater to win three straight World Championships since Scott Hamilton did it from 1981 to 1983. Hamilton went on to win a fourth consecutive World title in 1984; Chen could have potentially accomplished the same feat but the 2020 competition was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
