Following the withdrawal of Italian national silver medalist Matteo Rizzo – who announced yesterday that he will be unable to compete at the 2021 World Team Trophy – the substitute Gabriele Frangipani took to Instagram to announce that he was unable to fly to Japan, leaving Italy with just one participant in the men’s event.
Bronze medalist at this season’s national championships, Frangipani wrote: “As a replacement for Matteo Rizzo, I was supposed to leave for the WTT in Osaka but there were some hiccups, so I won’t be able to participate. Good luck to the whole team and strength.”
Italy will be participating in the World Team Trophy for the third time – the nation placed sixth in both of their previous appearances, in 2012 and 2019. Three-time national champion Daniel Grassl participated in the competition in 2019 but having just a single competitor in the men’s event will cost Italy a real opportunity to battle for the medals.
