Anastasia Zinina wins Moscow Junior Championships

Anastasia Zinina at the end of her free skate performance

At the Moscow Junior Championships this week, Angels of Plushenko figure skater Anastasia Zinina rose from fourth place after the short program to the very top after the free skate and won the Moscow Junior Championships.

Zinina began her performance with a quad toe loop-double toe loop combination and then landed another quad toe loop. Both of the quad jumps were ruled a quarter under rotated but Zinina was the only one of the competitors to attempt and land two quad jumps. She also landed a triple loop and a double axel in the first half of the routine, as well as a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, a triple flip-Euler-triple Salchow combination, and a triple Lutz in the second half. Zinina earned an exact score of 141 points for the free skate performance and received a total score of 209.05 points.

Maria Zakharova was third after the short program but rose a position higher to win a silver medal. The Sambo-70 representative fell on her opening quad toe loop attempt but completed the remaining jumping sequences without falling. Zinina received 129.96 points in the free skate and that added up to a total result of 198.13 points for the two performances.

Sofia Titova, who was trailing first place by less than a point after the short program, fell on her opening triple axel attempt. It was also downgraded. Titova did not attempt a quad jump but her total component score of 60 points allowed her to receive a top three score for the free skate. She earned a total of 127.86 points for the free skate and received a total competition score of 197.03 points.

Elizaveta Berestovskaya was sixth after the short program but managed to climb up in the overall standings to fourth place. Her opening quad toe loop was downgraded but the CSKA athlete was able to complete her free skate performance without any falls. Berestovskaya received a score of 123.50 points for the program and her total competition score was 188.81 points.

Another figure skater who trains at CSKA, Sofia Samodelkina, was one of the top favorites prior to the start of the competition. Samodelkina was surprisingly just twelfth after the short program but did not have much more success in the free skate. She under-rotated her opening triple axel and then popped a Salchow attempt. Her subsequent quad Salchow was downgraded and she fell on a triple Lutz later on. Samodelkina lost a lot of points and her free skate ranked only tenth (110.70 points), which kept her twelfth overall with a total competition score of 170.32 points.
