Russian figure skaters could not participate in the first two stages of the International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix series due to restrictions for Russian citizens entering France because of COVID-19; this week, the Russians have returned and have done so impressively in Slovakia.

In the junior women’s event, 15-year-old Sofia Muravieva, who trains at Angels of Plushenko, delivered an outstanding performance with a double axel, a triple flip, and a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination. Muravieva received a score of 72.52 points and took first place on the first day of the event.

Another representative of Evgeni Plushenko’s figure skating academy, Veronika Zhilina, completed the same jumps as the leader and earned a total component score of 31.06 points – just 0.02 points fewer than Muravieva (31.08 points) – to place second after the short program with a total score of 71.57 points.

A third Russian, Adelia Petrosian, also performed a mistake-free short program. A member of Eteri Tutberidze’s Khrustalny team, Petrosian landed a double axel, a triple flip, and a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination. She earned a result of 69.30 points.

Because there were no Russian representatives in the first two stages of the series, the ISU allowed the nation to send four figure skaters in each discipline for the remaining events. Maria Zakharova was the fourth competitor from Russia and placed fourth after the short program to complete a full Russian sweep of the top positions. She received a score of 69.04 points.
