After two dominant stages of the International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix series by American figure skaters, the tide seems to have turned and the return of Russians has brought in new favorites.

The first set of medals at the third stage of the series, in Kosice, Slovakia, were awarded in the junior men’s discipline.

Third after the short program, Kirill Sarnovskiy began his free skate performance with a triple axel-double toe loop combination and then another triple axel. He continued with a triple loop and a double axel. In the second half of the routine, Sarnovskiy completed a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, a triple flip, and a triple Lutz-Euler-triple Salchow combination. The figure skater representing Angels of Plushenko earned a score of 144.48 points for the program and received a total competition score of 215.96 points.

Second after the first day of the competition, Ilya Yablokov maintained the silver-medal position even though his competitors around him swapped places. The second Russian in the event popped his opening jump and only managed a double loop; however, afterwards he completed a triple loop. His following jumping sequences all received negative grades of execution – a quad toe loop-triple toe loop combination, a triple axel-triple toe loop combination, a triple Lutz-Euler-triple Salchow combination, and a triple axel. Yablokov’s final triple flip was completed successfully.

Although a difficult beginning, Yablokov’s performance improved the longer it went. He received a score of 134.14 points for the free skate and earned a total score of 207.39 points in the competition.

Leader of the discipline after the short program, U.S. representative William Annis received negative grades of execution on multiple elements and dropped in the overall standings but maintained a spot on the podium after the free skate. He began his second performance with a quad toe loop and then a triple axel. His third jumping sequence, a triple axel-double toe loop combination, was perhaps his best in the routine. Annis subsequently popped a loop attempt, and then managed to complete a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, a triple Lutz-Euler-triple Salchow combination, and a triple loop. The American received the fourth best score of 128.39 points for the free skate and earned an overall third place total of 204.60 points.
