At the first International Skating Union (ISU) Challenger Series competition of the 2021-2022 season, the Lombardia Trophy, two-time United States national champion Alysa Liu was first in the short program event and will have a twelve-point lead heading into the free skate event to decide the winner.

Already a winner at the Cranberry Cup International on the senior level this season, the 16-year-old Liu began her free skate performance with a double axel. Skating to Gypsy Dance II from Don Quixote, she also landed a triple flip and a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination. The American received a score of 74.31 points – nearly three full points more than she received last month (71.42 points).

Three-time Swiss national champion Alexia Paganini began her short program performance with a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination. The toe loop was a quarter-under-rotated and combination received a negative grade of execution. The 19-year-old figure skater successfully landed a triple loop and a double axel. She earned a score of 62.14 points for the performance.

Three-time Polish national champion Ekaterina Kurakova was less than a point away from second place. The Moscow-born 19-year-old under-rotated the second jump in her open triple flip-triple toe loop combination and received a quarter-under-rotation on her next triple Lutz. Kurakova also landed a double axel. She earned a total score of 61.51 points for the short program.

The winners of the last three Lombardia Trophy competitions were all either former or future world champions: Alina Zagitova won in 2017, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva won in 2018, and Anna Shcherbakova won in 2019. Previously, no American woman has won; Hannah Miller won the silver medal and Angela Wang won the bronze medal in 2014, and Mirai Nagasu won a bronze medal in 2016.
