Daniel Grassl wins at Lombardia Trophy

Italian figure skater Daniel Grassl entered Sunday’s free skate, at the Lombardia Trophy, in fifth place but a strong performance propelled him to take the gold medal.

The three-time Italian national champion began his performance with a quad Lutz and later landed a quad flip and a quad loop. The latter two quads received negative grades of execution but the remainder of the routine was completed successfully. The 19-year-old landed a triple axel-Euler-triple Salchow combination, a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, a triple flip-triple toe loop combination, and a triple Lutz. Grassl received a score of 173.54 points for the free skate and earned a total competition score of 247.80 points.

France’s Adam Siao Him Fa was second after the short program and manage to keep the silver medal position after the free skate. The three-time French national silver medalist began his free skate with a triple Lutz and then a triple axel attempt, after which he landed three quads in the following three jumping sequences – a Salchow, a toe loop in a combination with a double toe loop, and again another toe loop. The 20-year-old received the third-best free skate result of 156.85 points and his overall competition score was 237.39 points.

Georgian representative Morisi Kvitelashvili held fourth position after the first day of the competition but rose to third place on Sunday. The figure skater from Eteri Tutberidze’s Khrustalny team started his free skate routine with a quad Salchow. The 26-year-old former European bronze medalist completed a triple axel, a quad toe loop-triple toe loop, and a triple loop in the first half of the routine, following a quad toe loop, a triple flip-Euler-triple Salchow combination, and a triple flip-double toe loop combination in the second half. He received the second-best free skate score of 159.66 points and earn a total competition score of 236.18 points.
