At the final stage of the International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix series, Ilia Malinin kicked-off the men’s competition by winning the short program event on day one.

The 16-year-old Malinin began his performance with a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, and later landed a triple flip and a triple axel. Winner of the first stage of the series, he earned a new season’s best score of 81.31 points (1.24 points more than he received in August).

Russia’s Artem Kovalev was not far off the top score in the event; the 18-year-old completed the same jumping elements as Malinin, and even received a higher program component score than the leader (36.96 points, compared to Malinin’s 35.96 points), but lost out by a few fractions of a point in the element score – the main difference being that Kovalev’s flying sit spin was deemed Level 3, as opposed to Malinin’s being graded as Level 4. Kovalev received a total program score of 80.97 points and is currently second.

Winner of the third stage of the series, in Slovakia, Kirill Sarnovskiy completed his opening triple axel and triple flip but under-rotated the toe loop jump in his final triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination. The 15-year-old representative of Angels of Plushenko earned a score of 75.20 points for the short program and is currently in the bronze medal position.
