This weekend, reigning World champion Anna Shcherbakova began her 2021-2022 season with a solid short program performance at the international figure skating competition in Hungary – the 2021 Budapest Trophy – and leads her teammate Maiia Khromykh and compatriot Sofia Samodurova ahead of tomorrow’s free skate.

Wearing a new orange dress, the 17-year-old Shcherbakova landed a double axel to begin her routine, and then completed a triple flip and a triple Lutz-triple loop combination. The latter loop attempt was determined to be under-rotated by the judges. Skating to The Songs of Distant Earth by Kirill Richter, the three-time Russian national champion received a score of 74.76 points.

Making her international senior competition debut, 15-year-old Maiia Khromykh opened her short program routine with a double axel. Performing last year’s program to I’ll Take Care of You by Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa, Khromykh also completed a triple Lutz and a triple flip-triple toe loop combination. She received a score of 72.82 points for her presentation.

2020 European champion Sofia Samodurova performed early in the competition. The 19-year-old skated to Dua Lipa’s New Rules, choreographed by Florent Amodio, and landed a triple flip-triple toe loop combination, a double axel, and a triple Lutz. Samodurova received a score of 67.15 points.
