The fourth stage of this season’s Cup of Russia series has been taking place throughout this week in Kazan – winner of the senior women’s event at the previous stage, 14-year-old figure skater Sofia Samodelkina attempted two quads and celebrated a second consecutive gold medal.
Leader after the short program by about twelve points, Samodelkina began her free skate routine with two quad attempts – a toe loop and a Salchow. The latter jump was unsuccessful as Samodelkina fell. The quad was downgraded as well.
Skating to Habanera, a two-time medalist in this season’s International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix series, Samodelkina later completed a triple loop, a double axel, two triple Lutz-triple toe loop combinations, and a triple flip-Euler-triple Salchow combination. She received a score of 149.68 points for her free skate presentation and earned a total competition score of 228.54 points.
Just sixth after the short program, another 14-year-old who won two medals on this year’s ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit, Anastasia Zinina also tried two quads – unfortunately falling on both – but managed to rise to second place in the overall standings after the free skate.
Performing to Concierto de Aranjuez, the sole representative of Angels of Plushenko at this competition later successfully completed a triple loop and a double axel, and then landed a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, a triple flip-Euler-triple Salchow combination, as well as a triple Lutz-double toe loop combination. Zinina received a score of 123.49 points for her performance and earned a total competition result of 177.70 points.
A former student of Evgeni Plushenko, 17-year-old Valeria Shulskaya was third heading into the free skate but was unable to complete a clean long program to move up. Shulskaya began her free skate performance with a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination and a triple flip, but then fell on the entrance into a loop attempt and also on a subsequent double axel. She later completed a triple flip-double toe loop combination, but was called for under-rotations in the final triple Lutz and double axel-Euler-triple Salchow combination jumping sequences. Shulskaya received a score of 111.15 points and earned an overall competition score of 177.04 points.
