The Figure Skating Federation of Russia announced on Friday that, prior to their free dance performance, reigning World champions Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov have withdrawn from the 2022 Russian Figure Skating Championships due to an injury.
Katsalapov sustained an injury during training.
The ice dancers were leading the ice dance discipline after the rhythm dance.
Following the competition, Sinitsina took to Instagram to explain the situation. She posted, “Friends, we have very important news. We decided to withdraw from the free skate. It hit us a lot and very hard. But this is now the only correct decision.”
“This morning, at the last practice, Nikita told me that his old back injury had worsened again and that if he did a lift even once today, he would not be able to straighten out later! I was ready to take everything into my own hands as much as possible and almost carry it myself. But we still decided that it was not worth the risk.”
“We were determined to win and put all our efforts into getting it. Everyone saw how ready we are for this Russian Championship. In what shape we came to it.”
“Together with the doctors and coaches, we discussed our further actions for several hours and everyone came to the same conclusion that we should withdraw from the free program. In order to prevent the deterioration of the condition.”
“Friends, it is very difficult for us to make this decision ourselves. Upon arrival in Moscow, Nikita will immediately begin to restore his back. He already knows how to do it. To be in perfect shape for the next important starts!”
“You always support us on the ice, I hope you will support us and our decision now. Thank you very much for your understanding.”
