Two-time U.S. national champion Alysa Liu has withdrawn from the 2022 U.S. Figure Skating Championships before Friday night’s women’s free skate event due to a positive COVID-19 test result.

The 16-year-old figure skater was third after the short program the previous night.

Despite the withdrawal, Liu will still likely participate at the 2022 Winter Olympics by petitioning for a spot to the selection committee.

The 2020 World Junior bronze medalist has been the top American at each competition she has participated in this season. She won the Cranberry Cup International in August, won two stages of the International Skating Union (ISU) Challenger Series in September, and placed in the top five at both of her ISU Grand Prix Series appearances.
