The 2022 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships take place from January 18 to 23 in Tallinn, Estonia – the first time a European country hosts the competition. Athletes from the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Oceania will determine the winners in the men’s, women’s, pairs’, and ice dance disciplines.
Originally, the event was scheduled to take place in Tianjin, China; however, the Chinese Skating Association informed the International Skating Union (ISU) about the decision to cancel the event due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic last September. Reasons for the decision were cited as strict travel restrictions, quarantine requirements, safety concerns, and logistical challenges.
Estonia was selected a month later as a convenient replacement a week following the 2022 European Figure Skating Championships in the same location.
The last time the Four Continents Championships took place was February 2020 in Seoul, South Korea. Yuzuru Hanyu, Rika Kihira, Wenjing Sui and Cong Han, as well as Madison Chock and Evan Bates won each of the four disciplines. Hanyu, Sui and Han, or Chock and Bates will not defend their titles as they are preparing for the 2022 Winter Olympics in about two weeks. Kihira has been sidelined all season due to an injury.
Viewers are able to watch the competition via the national broadcaster of their location; further information can be found on the ISU website.
