The Figure Skating Federation of Russia announced on Tuesday that Mikhail Kolyada will not take part in the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics and will be replaced by Evgeni Semenenko.
This comes following a positive COVID-19 test result by Kolyada prior to leaving for the pre-Olympic training camp in Krasnoyarsk.
Kolyada is a three-time Russian national champion and 2019 World bronze medalist. The 26-year-old figure skater previously participated at the the 2018 Winter Olympics where he won the silver medal in the team event and later placed eighth in the men’s competition.
18-year-old Semenenko came to prominence last season after he became the junior national champion. He had been selected to take part in the 2021 World Championships and finished in eighth place, after which he was part of the Russian team that won the World Team Trophy for the first time ever. This season, Kolyada won a bronze medal at Skate Canada, was fourth at the national championships, and placed fifth at the European Championships two weeks ago.
